There’s a certain kind of jazz that doesn’t need to shout to hold a room. The Robert Reid Jazz Trio brings exactly that spirit: elegant, melodic and deeply rooted in the traditions of classic jazz piano.
After originally studying classical piano, Reid’s musical direction changed when he discovered jazz legends including Fats Waller, Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson. His style balances technical finesse with feeling, warmth and spontaneity. He has performed extensively throughout London and the South East and, alongside members of his ensembles, shared stages and bills with musicians including Humphrey Lyttelton, Scott Hamilton, Jacqui Dankworth, Jamie Cullum, Liane Carroll, Acker Bilk, Derek Nash and John Etheridge.
Bassist Danny Moss Jnr is celebrated for his Ray Brown-inspired time, tone and swing. He has performed and recorded with jazz musicians including Danny Moss MBE, Jeannie Lambe, John Dankworth, Don Burrows, John Critchinson, Martin Drew, Scott Hamilton, Tony Coe and Simon Spillett. His career has included major European jazz festivals and more than three years touring in Hank Marvin’s quartet, where his driving, harmonically sympathetic playing earned him the nickname ‘The Pathfinder’ from John Critchinson. Tony MacDonnell, associated with Tubby Hayes and John Dankworth, is on drums.
Expect standards from the Great American Songbook alongside Latin jazz, blues, gospel influences and improvisation. The trio’s music moves between relaxed listening and moments of sparkling musical conversation. A £6 contribution supports live musicians.
