About All Saints Church

All Saints Church is a Grade II* listed building dating from the early 15th century, forming part of the Old Town Parish alongside another medieval church. The current structure was built between 1417 and 1430, replacing an earlier church destroyed in 1377 during the Hundred Years War. Notable historical features include a rare ‘Doom’ painting of the Last Judgement above the chancel arch, rediscovered in the 19th century and carefully restored. The church also houses a Father Willis organ from 1878, which remains tonally unaltered and is used for a series of summer organ concerts performed by leading recitalists. Inside, visitors can find original elements such as an octagonal baptismal font, two piscinas, three stone seats, and a Saxon stone cross above the south porch, likely from the earlier building. The church underwent restoration by Victorian architect William Butterfield. Maintaining this historic site requires significant funding, and donations are welcomed to support its upkeep and preservation.
